Charts that show what the data says, and nothing it does not.
Two A4 pages on honest charts with matplotlib, on the Verdant Union tables of Green on Paper. Five charts drawn from the data are printed beside the code that drew them.
It covers choosing a line, bars, a scatter or small multiples from the question; a house style set once; axes with units; a title that states the finding; annotating the point that matters; bars that start at zero; small multiples instead of a spaghetti chart; a scatter with a reference line on log axes; colour with one job; one axis indexed to 100 instead of two y-axes; readable tick labels; and saving the figure.
It shows how the same data can mislead: a renewable share that jumps to 61% because coal and nuclear rows are flagged renewable, a start year that, with that flag, turns an 11-point rise into an 18-point fall, and a cut axis that draws an 11-point rise as a bar 7.7 times as tall. It ends with a checklist for every chart before it is published.
