Agree what a dataset holds and guarantees before the first number goes into a report.
A Word template for a data contract between the team that produces a dataset and the teams that use it: purpose, owner and consumers, grain and key, a schema table (column, type, meaning, allowed values, nullable, example), quality guarantees with thresholds and the test for each, delivery schedule, change process with notice periods, contacts and sign-off. Grey guidance text says what to write in each part.
It comes with a filled example for the ag_exports table from Can I Trust This Data?: nine guarantees run on the first delivery, with the real counts. Seven fail: 103 rows against the 100 described, 33 rows that repeat a key, 3 exact duplicates, 2 rows with no year, 7 rows whose country name is not in the master list (3 spellings), 3 export values of zero or below, and 3 commodity-years with no rows.
DOCX for Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs. Four A4 pages: two to fill in, two of example.
